When did you get into hip-hop?

I got into hip hop really in the G-Funk era, when Warren G was doing his thing.  I can remember This DJ being one of the very very first rap songs I’ve ever heard, and watching all those Snoop and Dre videos.  As I got older, the older dudes when I was growing up, put me on to some of the stuff that I missed like Eric B and Rakim, EPMD, definitely Wu-Tang, and all that ’94 and before stuff that was just pure.

What makes you an expert in battles?

Nothing really, haha.  It’s one of the aspects of hip-hop that I love, cause its the most raw.  And there’s nothing that compares to hearing a sick line directed at someone else in particular, whether its on a diss track or in a head-to-head.  There’s just a focus to a battle that I love, one topic: me being better than you – thats it.  But other than that, I’ve done some work in music for a few years.  Been involved with some large music management companies of successful bands – more on the rock and metal side.  I’ve managed an artist and worked with a couple of pretty awesome producers from the west.  So I’ve been around music quite a bit, done a real little bit of the A&R.  But, I’ve always loved the battle scene, especially what it has become.

First battle that you remember?

I remember someone playing me that old Busy B Starski-Kool Moe D shit on a tape.  When it was all that, “in the place to be” shit, haha.  When I heard that “I admit that guy could rock a crowd, but it when it comes to having rhymes, theres no way he can fuck around” I started laughing.  Then I was really all about it: Kool Moe D battling LL, Juice and Supernat, LL and Canibus, the Eyedea-Brother Ali battle, Scribble Jame stuff, those older Real 6 videos, even Freestyle Friday-whatever it is, I want to watch it.
